This 1883 Liberty Head Nickel “No Cents” variety is a classic and widely collected early issue from the United States five-cent series, graded MS63 by PCGS. Designed by Charles E. Barber, the obverse features the left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY,” surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse displays a large Roman numeral “V” encircled by a wreath of cotton, corn, and wheat, with the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” Notably, this early 1883 issue lacks the word “CENTS,” which led to confusion and even fraud when gold-plated examples were passed as $5 gold coins, giving rise to its famous nickname.

Struck in a copper-nickel alloy, this example exhibits the strong detail and moderate luster typical of an MS63 grade, with light contact marks consistent with the designation. The “No Cents” subtype represents a short-lived but historically significant design variation, as the Mint quickly added “CENTS” later in 1883 to prevent misuse. Collectors value this coin for both its affordability in Mint State and its unique place in U.S. numismatic history, making it an essential addition to any Liberty Nickel set.
