The 1935 Great Britain Silver Jubilee Crown was issued to commemorate the 25th anniversary of King George V’s reign. The obverse features the left-facing portrait of King George V by Bertram Mackennal, surrounded by the Latin royal legend. The reverse displays Percy Metcalfe’s highly stylized Art Deco interpretation of St. George slaying the dragon, a design often nicknamed the “Rocking Horse” crown because of the horse’s unusual modernist form. This example is certified by NGC as MS64+ and is identified on the holder as the incuse edge lettering variety.
Struck by the Royal Mint, this crown has a denomination of one crown and is composed of .500 fine silver. Specifications include a weight of 28.276 grams, diameter of 38.61 mm, and actual silver weight of approximately 0.4545 troy ounce. Thickness is not consistently published by major grading references for this issue, though the coin follows the broad, substantial format typical of British crowns.
