The 1958-D Franklin Half Dollar is a superb late-date example of the beloved Franklin Half Dollar series, struck at the Denver Mint during the final years before the introduction of the Kennedy Half Dollar in 1964. Designed by John R. Sinnock, the obverse features a right-facing portrait of Benjamin Franklin, while the reverse showcases the Liberty Bell alongside a small eagle, which was added to comply with legal requirements for half dollar coinage. This example has been certified NGC MS67 FBL, an elite Gem Mint State grade with Full Bell Lines designation, indicating exceptionally sharp strike detail on the Liberty Bell’s horizontal lines.
The Full Bell Lines designation is especially important among Franklin Half Dollar collectors, as it signifies strong strike quality and minimal disturbance to the bell lines from contact marks or wear. Coins graded MS67 FBL are highly sought after due to their outstanding preservation, booming luster, and scarcity in such high grades. The 1958-D issue is known for attractive strikes and brilliant surfaces when well preserved, and this example displays exceptional eye appeal with crisp details throughout Franklin’s portrait and the reverse bell design. As a 90% silver United States coin from the final years of circulating silver coinage, it remains popular with both numismatists and silver collectors alike.
