Considered to be the heaviest US gold coin, the American Gold Eagle consists of pure .999 gold and a copper/silver alloy, making the American Gold Eagle weigh a little more than other gold coins. Due to this addition of metals, the American Gold Eagle is 22 karats. The US Mint has produced this gold series in brilliant uncirculated and proof condition. The burnished versions are only available in 1oz increments.
