The first year of striking these $20 Gold Double Liberty coins for circulation was in 1850. The series was continued through 1907 when the design changed mid-year and the Saint-Gaudens coins were also struck. The Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, James B. Longacre, designed this Liberty Double Eagle, using Christian Gobrecht’s earlier gold coin designs. Longacre’s obverse depicts the large representation of Miss Liberty, facing to the left. There are thirteen six-pointed stars around her portrait and the date is below the portrait. The reverse depicts a large, heraldic style American Bald Eagle, with arrows and an olive branch in her talons. There are thirteen six-pointed stars above the eagle, in an oval shape. These stars are encircling the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The motto “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and the denomination “TWENTY DOLLARS,” are displayed on the lower periphery. This coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint where more than 6.2 million coins were minted. It has been graded by PCGS and attained the investment MS65 grade. For a large, heavy gold coin, stored only in bags with other heavy, gold coins, it is amazing how few survived in Mint State grade and far fewer survived in MS65 grade. It is definitely a “condition rarity.” It is truly a gorgeous example of the largest gold coin ever made for circulation by the US Mint.
