The 2011 George T. Morgan $100 Union 5 oz Silver Private Issue is based on Morgan’s proposed 1876 design for a large-format $100 “Union” coin, a denomination that was considered but never officially adopted for regular United States coinage. The obverse features a seated Liberty holding a small figure of Victory, with agricultural elements, stars, “LIBERTY,” and the 1876 date surrounding the central design. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield, arrows, olive branch, and the inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” closely echoing the symbolic language of classic U.S. pattern and federal coinage.
This privately issued proof was struck in 2011 from five troy ounces of pure silver and certified by NGC as Ultra Cameo Gem Proof. The label identifies it as “George T. Morgan $100 Union, Proposed Design 1876, Struck 2011, Private Issue, Five Ounce Pure Silver.” George T. Morgan is best known as the designer of the famous Morgan Silver Dollar, making this tribute issue especially appealing to collectors of Morgan-related designs, U.S. pattern-inspired pieces, and large silver proof issues. Heritage and GreatCollections both describe this issue as a 2011 private issue struck in five ounces of pure silver.
