The silver Britannia series began in 1997 by the Royal Mint. The Royal Mint is the main coin manufacturer for the United Kingdom and has earned a reputation for producing great quality coins that appeal to the investor and collector. Every Britannia is .999 fine silver, in brilliant uncirculated condition with proof-like qualities, and are packaged in individual coin flips. Just 100,000 silver coins were minted in 2008! If you are looking to invest in silver online and want a credible collection, the silver Britannias are a great start!
This is the first time we see the reverse design change for an even-numbered year. Usually, the Britannia is standing with trident and olive branch in hand, but this time the Royal Mint has changed her look altogether. Britannia stands triumphantly with her famous trident in one hand and her shield in the other. This is the design that was used for Britannia hundreds of years ago and the Royal Mint has resurrected it. Her robe flows in an almost ocean wave design, as she looks with an intense gaze to her right. Her head still bears the weight of the bronze Corinthian helmet but her long locks elegantly flow in the wind. Around the outer edge of the Britannia, the coin's weight, "one ounce fine silver," is inscribed, along with "Britannia," and the year of mintage, "2008." The obverse pictures Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as she sits in a pronounced side view of her profile. This design of the Queen was created by famous British sculptor, Ian Rank-Broadley, and has become a favorite featured on all Commonwealth of Nations bullion coins. The Britannia's legal tender value, "2 pounds," is written under the Queen, along with the Latin saying, "Red Fid Def," which means Defender of the Faith. Don't miss out on the chance to own a little bit of British history! The 2008 Britannia has been turning heads for years but supplies won't last much longer!
