The United States would mourn the death of its popular Republican president, William McKinley. On a trip to Buffalo, New York, McKinley was shot twice by a Polish anarchist. He would die from his wounds days later. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt came to power and would become one of the nationâ€™s most popular and well recognized presidents. Earlier in the year, the long reigning British Queen Victoria, died, bringing to end what would later be known as the Victorian Age. Later, Great Britain and the United States signed a treaty giving the United States the right to build a canal through Panama to join the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Also in the year 1900, the Cadillac Motor company was founded in Detroit and Gillette got in the disposable razor business.

The US Mint would once again break mintage records, issuing over 79,000,000 Indian Head cents this year. This was partly due to the fact that the US Mint in Philadelphia moved to another larger building allowing for an increase in production. This was not a popular year to collect at the time, so there are not as many perfect examples as the hugh mintage would suggest. These pennies were, in fact, souvenirs from different expositions and come with aluminum advertising cards. These can actually be widely collected today.

The mintage for Proof Indian Head cents for the year 1901 actually decreased slightly. As with all proofs from this era, finding perfect red gems is increasingly difficult. This year, early die state examples show some fine polishing lines. On its face, these may look like abrasions or improper cleaning, but are in fact from die polishing. There are many varieties from this year. Most are repunched dates, but none are very popular.
