Due to poor public reception, the mint discontinued its 500 million coin series but brought back the Susan B. Anthony Dollar in 1999. The Susan B. Anthony Dollar was quite short-lived; having a lifespan from 1979-1981. There were several deliberations about the new dollar's portrait and design. The vending machine industry protested against many of these new ideas, being a powerful lobby in the coin legislation. Even with the final product decided, the Susan B. Anthony Dollar didn't get much traction since its size and color resembled the quarter. It has been recorded that the Susan B. Anthony Dollar was mainly used in vending machines and mass public transportation fees. Type 1 is referring to the "S" mint-mark, since the San Francisco produced two types. The type 1 "S" mint-mark contains a shorter and fatter "S" then the Type 2 version. The 1981-S Susan B. Anthony Dollar Proof Type 2 is in pristine proof condition and carries the infamous "S" mint-mark. The Susan B. Anthony Dollar is the perfect short collection for a child or new collector!
