  • Description:

Grandson to 9th president, William Henry Harrison, Benjamin Harrison was elected 23rd president of the United States. With his background in mainly law and local politics, Harrison led a content life in Indianapolis. Harrison fought in the Union Army for the Civil War as a colonel, ranking low compared to past presidents' ranks. After the war, Harrison would be elected into the Senate, where he would begin his political career. Harrison is mainly known for his efforts in the National Forests preservation, voting rights for African American, modernizing the Navy, and proposing federal education funding. Although Harrison beat Grover Cleveland for his second term, Cleveland won the popular vote when Harrison re-ran for president. After his presidency, Harrison spent some time overseas doing law work for Venezuela. When he returned to his beloved Indianapolis, he died caused by the flu.

Benjamin Harrison led a successful presidency but is still bypassed other presidents' successes. Don Everhart, a mint-engraver, designed Harrison's portrait on the obverse of the 2012-D dollar. The Presidential Dollar series began in 2007 and features four presidents every year. Beginning with Washington, the Presidential Dollar series is minted in chronological order of the presidency placement. In 2012, Harrison shares the year with Chester Arthur and Grover Cleveland. These dollars get their unique golden pigment from their metallic composition of brass and copper. The Denver Mint is considered the leader in coin production worldwide and takes pride in its participation in the historical Presidential Dollars. The date and mint-mark can be located on the rim of every brilliant uncirculated dollar. Many collectors enjoy this series, due to its unique color, its interesting history, and the low premiums offered for these dollars!
