  • Description:

Early in the year 1899, President William McKinley signed a peace treaty with Spain thus ending the Spanish American War. In the peace treaty, Spain would cede Puerto Rico and Guam to the liberty loving and former British colony, the United States. The US also gained certain rights in the Philippines. Later in the year the Philippine American War would start, as the average Filipino was expecting to be liberated from Spain, soon found that they had another imperialist to deal with. At the heart of the conflict, Cuba won its independence from Spain. The US President would also be the first of his title to ride in an automobile.

This was another year of high mintage figures for the Indian Head cent. The US Mint would continue to increase the mintages for this series. This date is typically a little more common than that of the other 1890’s cents. This could be because many decided to keep this penny, as it was the last in the 1800’s. Those collectors looking for red gems will have no problem finding the 1899 in near perfect condition. All other grades should be readily available to all collectors.

The mintage for Proof Indian Head cents increased a little from the year before, at just over 2,000 pennies, however this was still a low year for proof Indian Head cents generally speaking. Despite this, collectors should be able to find better grade examples from this year without too much trouble. This year has over twenty varieties. As with every other year in the Indian Head cent series, most are repunched dates. There is a very popular overdate, the 1899/7. However it is contested as to whether this is a proper overdate or an imperfection in the die over the last nine.
