  • Description:

The country continued to wane economically through the year 1895. The United States treasury reserves fell all the way to $41 million. Famously, in order to help the government, J. P. Morgan and August Belmont loaned the government $62 million in gold. As no wealthy capitalist goes into a deal to lose money, they were given bonds at very attractive rates. At the other end of the economic spectrum, thousands of laborers walked off their jobs and traveled to Washington DC to petition Congress for better pay and shorter hours. For those lovers of literature, Crane’s Civil War masterpiece, The Red Badge is Courage, was published this year.

The mintage figures of 1895 Indian Head cents increased from years prior to over 38,000,000 cents. The US Mint would continue striking cents at a higher volume fife the rest of the series until 1909. Due to increased production, today this year’s issues can be found readily available in all grades. Collectors should search for examples without defects, as so many coins are available today.

Although this was a year with higher montage for circulation cents, proof Indian Head cents actually decreased from the year prior. The issues are actually strong for this year and full red gems can actually be found with relative ease. Up to this point, over 30 varieties are known for this year.
