  • Description:

On the first day of 1892 Ellis Island opened its doors to immigrants. During its tenure it would welcome over 60 million immigrants to New York Harbor. William Wrigley would begin selling chewing gum in 1892. In the political arena, 1892 would famously be remembered as the election of Grover Cleveland, again. To date, he is the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms. This year was also the 400th year anniversary of Columbus’ voyage to the New World. Chicago would hold the World’s Columbian Exposition a year later. The US Mint would make the 1892 World’s Columbian Half Dollar to commemorate the year. Also, the US Mint would begin issue the Barber series. Charles Barber created the country’s new half, quarter and dime that would circulate until 1916.

Once again the US Mint would decrease its mintage of Indian Head cents. This year the US Mint made just over 37,000,000. The cause for this decrease was an increase in the cost of planchets. It appears the private companies may have conspired to increase their prices. The Mint director at the time rejected all bids and created Indian Head cents from the blank planchets they had on hand. The director would later recommend that the US Mint make its own planchets later. This year’s Indian Head cents would survive much like those in years prior. The coins were heavily circulated and true gems are very hard to come by.

Although the Mint decreased its production of circulation cents, the production of proof issues remained consistent. Due to this, the 1892 proof issue is readily available to proof cent collectors. Even cameo examples from this year are more readily available from this year than in others. 1892 was not an exciting year for varieties. Only minor repunched dates and some very minor reverse double dies are known.
