  • Description:

When the US Mint decided to do a speciality coin, for the bicentennial year, it was unclear how much of an undertaking it would be. There is no Eisenhower dollar, marked with the date of 1975, since most of the bicentennial dollars were minted that year but carry the 1976 date. Out of the millions produced those two years, two types evolved from the mass productions. Type I are the Eisenhower dollars that were produced earlier on in the bicentennial production. The lettering, on their reverse, reveals a bold, block font, compared to the delicate, fancier font on the reverse of the Type II, which was produced later on. For collection purposes, both types include the same reverse design: a moon superimposed over the Liberty Bell. The 1976-S Clad Proof Type I Eisenhower dollar is made out of a copper-nickel alloy and shines with the flawless finish of a proof coin.
