Details
Due to the California Gold Rush and the distrust of paper money, the US Mint started producing gold coins, with larger denominations. The main purpose, of minting the $20 Liberty, was to make bigger transactions easier. Congress passed a bill, in 1849, that allowed for the minting of the $20 Liberty double eagle. The $20 Liberty is also called a double eagle since it was worth double what the original eagle was. The $20 Liberty in extra fine condition exhibits a healthy amount of wear on the coin's total surface. The coin's date may vary, depending on our current inventory, and is not guaranteed. The $20 Liberty is all common dates and scarcer dates are sold separately, at a higher premium.
