The Peace Silver dollar became the new design for the US silver dollar in 1921, while sharing the spotlight with the Morgan silver dollar. The Pittman Act of 1918 required the US Mint to produce millions of silver dollars over the next decade. The Morgan's design was the default for the silver dollar but numismatists fought for a new design that commemorated the peace attained from World War I. The Peace dollar was the first silver dollar that represents peace for the US. The San Francisco Mint also joined in to help produce the right amount of dollars per year. The San Francisco Mint marks their coins by placing a "S" on the reverse of every coin.
