Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th president of the United States, elected twice into office by the Republican party. Grant is more formally remembered as the Commander General of the United States Army, who led the Union to victory during the Civil War. Grant worked closely with Lincoln, Lincoln was the brains behind the operation while Grant was the brute force. After graduating from West Point and serving in the Mexican-American War, Grant decided the retire from the Army life. Due to enormous financial struggles, Grant decided to rejoin the Army where most of his legacy lies. As president, Grant desired to make sure the minorities of African Americans and Native Americans were taken care of as far as their rights were concerned. Grant died of throat cancer after his second term as president.

The Presidential Dollar series began in 2007, as a means to honor past presidents. Each year, the Philadelphia and Denver Mints each produce four coins featuring past presidents, going in chronological order starting with Washington. The Presidential Dollar series is in brilliant uncirculated condition and contain a copper/manganese brass alloy, resulting in their popular golden tone. Ulysses S. Grant is featured on the obverse of the 2011-D Presidential Dollar, produced by the Denver Mint. Known as the leading coin producer in the world, the Denver Mint marks all of its coins with the "D" mint-mark. For all of the Presidential Dollars, the date and place of mintage are on the rim of the coins. The reverse highlights one of the United States' iconic figures, the Statue of Liberty, along with the coin's monetary denomination. For collectors, who enjoy low-key collections that also offer historical value, the Presidential Dollar series is the perfect series!
