  • Description:

Andrew Johnson was only Vice President for 6 short weeks before the assassination of Lincoln made him president. Johnson gave a rambling speech, when he became Vice President to Lincoln, causing Johnson to withdraw from public scrutiny. Born in impoverished North Carolina, Johnson spent most of his childhood and young adulthood as an apprentice to a tailor. Later on, he became a city council member and a town mayor, paving his way through the new world of politics. Unfortunately, Johnson inherited the aftermath of the Civil War and tried to restore the succeeded Southern states to the Union. Johnson didn't consider giving protection to the newly freed slaves, leading him to be the first president to be impeached. Johnson's ranking in presidents has remained low over time, since he didn't help with the African American rights.

Andrew Johnson kicks of the Presidential Dollar series for 2011 and shares this date with Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, and James A. Garfield. The Presidential Dollar series memorializes four presidents a year, by featuring their portraits on the obverse of the dollar. Andrew Johnson's side portrait is portrayed on the 2011-P obverse, as well as his single term in office. The prominent Statue of Liberty is on the reverse of dollar, including the coin's legal tender value as well. If you are new to coin collecting, one thing you might notice first, about the Presidential Dollars, is the unique golden color of the actual coins. Although these dollars do not contain actual gold, their copper and manganese brass alloys lend to the deceiving color. It also cannot be guaranteed that this roll will come in original packaging. The Philadelphia Mint includes their "P" mint-mark on the rim of the coin, as well as the date of mintage. The Presidential Dollar series are in brilliant uncirculated condition and are sold in rolls of 25 coins.
