  • Description:

In the year 1905, President Roosevelt invited Japanese and Russian delegates to the United States to bring an end to the Russo Japanese War. This would be the first major foreign war to be brought to an end on United States soil by a peace treaty. The United States would soon see many changes of its own. At this point, Las Vegas had a population of thirty and the average life expectancy of Americans was only 47 year. From these humble times, the United States would grow to the world’s most powerful nation. All the while, innovative Americans continued to invent and perfect new technologies, this year none more promising than the Wright brothers’ flying machine. This year they would fly 38 minutes in a single flight!

1905 mintage figures increased back up to its near record number. The US Mint issued over 80 million cents this year. Even though many were issued this year, the US Mint still took back many coins from the public they deemed unfit for circulation. Some years it was up to five million cents. These would be melted down and recoined. This year’s issue can be found in every grade for those collectors willing to search. The cents circulated widely and at least up to the Second World War. It is estimated that roughly 1,000 full red uncirculated cents survive today.

The proof mintages this year was not low, but it was not high by any standard. Over 2,100 proof cents were minted in 1905. Many high grade examples survive until today. As with the other proof specimens of the 1900’s Indian Head cents, the near perfect examples do have the die polishing lines. One must remember not to downgrade coins with these lines, or worse, mistake them for hairlines. Roughly 30 varieties for the 1905 Indian Head cent are known today. As with all other Indian Head cents, they are mostly repunched dates, however, three are doubled die reverses!
