  • Description:

During America’s Gilded Age, innovation ruled supreme. It was no different in the year 1880. Thomas Edison continued to develop and perfect practical light bulbs. Singer’s sewing machines began to shape and change the textile market. Cyrus McCormick invented the mechanical reaper that changed the face of American farming. Although Republicans considered running Grant for a third term, something unprecedented at the time, they settled on James Garfield, who ended up winning the election. This would be another special year for the US Mint, as they continued to produce the now prohibitively rare $4 Stellas.

The mintage for the 1880 Indian Head cent this year by far outpaced the past few years combined, with a total mintage of just under 39,000,000. This was the most minted year for cents since the Civil War. Despite its high mintage, the quality of the coins remained high for the most part. This year’s issue circulated widely and well into the twentieth century. However, collectors should be able to find these cents in all grades.

As the circulation mintage was high, the proof issue too was higher than past years, with just under 4,000 proof Indian Head cents minted that year. Many proof issues have survived in mint condition and proof collectors should have no trouble finding cameo examples as well! The 1880 Indian Head cent also has a very popular variety. There is a reverse off-center clash. There is an impression of the obverse die on the reverse. This variety also includes a slight doubling of the word “Liberty” on the obverse. As there is a lot going on with this variety, it is a widely sought after coin in the series!
