  • Description:

In 1879 the farmers of the United States finally got a much needed break from the economic downturns. Crop yields in Europe were dangerously low, so demand for grains from the United States were in high demand. America Continued to innovate its way to greatness. Brooklyn started delivering milk in bottles,it seems archaic only now, instead of pouring it directly into customer’s pitchers. The patent for what would become the automobile was filed this year. Frank Woolworth opened his first five and dime store, starting a company that would forever change the way retail sales would be conducted. The US Mint would create its first “Stella” or $4 coin, becoming the most prohibitively expensive group of coins in the entire American series. Also in Mint news, after a long hiatus beginning in the Civil War, the New Orleans Mint would finally begin making coins again in 1879.

The US Mint finally began minting Indian Head cents in bulk again. The mintage figure for 1879 would be over 16,000,000. In addition to this, the US Mint would rerelease roughly 3,000,000 redeemed cents back into circulation. Now that greenbacks would be fully redeemable in gold and silver, coins began to flood the market and streets of America. This year’s Indian Head cent is actually a rather common date. In fact, most Indian Head cents from this year onward, with a few notable exceptions, would be pretty common.

The mintage of proof issues would continue to rise as it did the year before. Now the mintage figure would be over 3,000. Even finding red gem uncirculated proofs would be relatively common for this year. Finally the American goddess Liberty gracing the obverse of the coin would become a more reachable coin for early collectors. As with all other Indian Head cents, there are some repunched date varieties known for this year.
