  • Description:

George T. Morgan was born to be an engraver and an engraver he was. His resume of engraving started early in England, where he was trained to engrave coins. Taking a big professional step to the West, Morgan moved to the US and became an assistant engraver for 30 years before he was announced the Chief Engraver for the United States Mint. It was at the US Mint Morgan would design a coin that would be named after him. On other coins in circulation, the Lady Liberty is shown from head to toe, her slender body in full view. But Morgan's take was of her beautiful face and at a side angle, he respectively portrays her features as delicate and lovely. Your 1889 Morgan was minted in Philadelphia and is considered to be in almost uncirculated condition. Since there were a lot of Morgans minted in 1889, the low premium on this coin makes it easy for collectors to fill a set of Morgans at an achievable price.
