  • Description:

Although it has gotten better through the years, regulating the production of silver has always caused political tension. When the Morgan Silver dollar was first being minted, there were many free lance miners that would be paid for their silver, by the US mint. Since the mint didn't have records of who sold what when, the government tried to take the regulating into their own hands and passed a bill that gave the US mint deadlines for their silver dollar production. Since this bill and others were not too popular, they were repealed. This political drama led to the authorization of the Morgan, then unauthorized its production right after. Unfortunately, the Morgan could only be minted from 1878-1904. There was one more hail Mary act that allowed for the minting of the Morgan for another year in 1921 but the popularity of the Peace dollar took all of the attention off of the Morgan. Your 1887-O Morgan carries the "O" mint-mark and is considered to be in almost uncirculated condition.
