  • Description:

Certainly one of the United States most famous pair of brothers, the Wright brothers are credited with inventing the airplane. Although thought to be genius inventors, neither Wright brother held a high school diploma. Despite this, the brothers started a successful bicycle business in Dayton, Ohio. It appears the brothers always showed a great interest in flight and started designing gliders. It was eventually the invention of the three axis control system that made their Wright Flyer such a success. The brothers have always shared credit equally between themselves for their invention. Although the brothers became immortal in the minds of Americans after their invention, they lived in relative obscurity after their invention.

The obverse of the 2003 First Flight Centennial Commemorative Silver dollar depicts the two brothers, Orville and Wilbur, looking to the left of the coin. Under the busts of the two brothers is their names. At each side of them are the dates “1903 2003”. The obverse is inspired by the Wright Brothers Congressional Medal created by George T Morgan in 1909. The obverse was designed by T James Ferrell. The reverse of the coin depicts the Wright Flyer gliding over the sands of Kitty Hawk. The viewer can see Orville flying the original airplane. Otherwise, the reverse of the coin is quite plain. Only the words “One Dollar”, “United States of America”, and E Pluribus Unum” are written on the coin. The Philadelphia Mint mark can be seen at three o’clock on the coin.

The 2003 Uncirculated First Flight Centennial Commemorative silver dollar has a mintage of 53,533 coins. The coin was designed to commemorate Wilbur and Orville’s creation of the first successful airplane.
