  • Description:

The San Francisco Mint produced almost 9 million quarters in 1877, resulting in an easily accessible coin. Branded with the "S" mint-mark, the 1877-S Seated Liberty Quarter is in fine condition. Exhibiting heavy wear on both sides of the coin, the 1877-S Seated Liberty Quarter lacks detailing on its main images. The San Francisco Mint is one of the oldest mints in the US and is precisely known for its strong strikes and lower mintages. The West-Coast based mint was established for the convenience of prospectors during the gold rush. In just its first year of production, the San Francisco Mint had to move to another location for its expanding business. Nowadays, it's mainly responsible for production of the proof sets that are released yearly. Although the Seated Liberty Quarter series is comprised of 90% silver coins, this series is not for the faint of heart. Only ambitious collectors take on the challenge of collecting this low mintage, high premium series.

The Seated Liberty design was used on all coinage, such as the dime, quarter, and half dollar. This was the trend until 1916, wherein the US Mint assigned different designs to all the denominational coins. The Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mint participated in the production of the Seated Liberty Quarter. The San Francisco Mint was established until 1854 so it joined in later on for the series. The Philadelphia Mint was the first mint to be commissioned in the US, as a means to put the new nation on the map for international commerce. The first mint facility was established by the original Founding Fathers and has had its hand in every successful coin series since!
