  • Description:

Most notably in the United States, 1876 was America’s 100th birthday. For the first time, the world’s fair was to be held in the United States. The Centennial Exposition was held in Philadelphia, the cradle of American democracy. Later in the year, the Battle of Little Bighorn took place. This was one of the few instances of a Native American victory against the American military or militia. General George Custer and 264 of his men were killed in the battle by the Sioux chief, Sitting Bull and his men. In an unfortunate turn of events, Rutherford Hayes was voted in as president, largely for promising to remove federal oversight from the former Confederate States. This was followed by large civil rights abuses and segregation.

As the year before, the 1876 Seated Liberty half dollar is one of the most common coins of the series. Over 8 million coins were issued. Although the half dollars from 1876 typically come weakly struck, this year’s issue can be very easily found in circulation grades especially in higher grades. Those collectors gathering Seated Liberty half dollars in circulated grades should take the time to find a very well struck, problem free coin from 1876. Even in mint state, this coin is readily available. It is believed that over 500 1876 Seated halves exist today.

There was a modification in the hub this year as well. Along the branch clutched by the eagle’s right claw is a berry. The 1876 Type I shows the berry open and splitting in two. The 1876 Type II shows the same berry slender and closed. As a general rule of thumb, the Type I was used before 1876 and in circulation strikes through the next year. The Type II was used on Philadelphia strikes until the end of the series. One other variety exists this year. There is a large date over small date variety. The date was intended for the quarter and was used on some half dollars. This was later corrected.
