  • Description:

The successor of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson assumed presidency and became the 36th president of the United States. Although Johnson followed through with many of Kennedy's goals, his departure of other goals led to his following collapsing. Johnson led a life of politics, becoming one of four people to serve as both vice president and president, as well as serving in both houses of Congress. Designing the Great Society legislation, Johnson upheld the Civil Rights movement, public broadcasting, Medicare, Medicaid, the arts, rural and urban development, and his "War on Poverty." Johnson greatly departed from Kennedy's goal of only having 16,000 troops in Vietnam. Johnson was granted military access to Southeast Asia without needing to sign a declaration of war. This alone led to over 500,000 troops deployed overseas with many lives taken in the Vietnam War. At the same time, riots broke out in the US and crime was at an all time high. Johnson slowly lost his popularity as it seemed the country and the war were out of control. Johnson retired to his Texas ranch, where he died 4 years later of a heart attack.

Lyndon B. Johnson is still remembered favorably by historians due to his impact on civil rights, gun control laws, wilderness preservation, and Social Security. Johnson's face is designed on the obverse of the 2015-S Presidential Dollar. The iconic design of Statue of Liberty is displayed on reverse, as well as the coin's monetary denomination. The Presidential Dollar series began in 2007 and will continue to honor all presidents, who have passed away for at least two years.
