Description:
The 1899-CC $20.00 Gold Liberty is a wonderful coin. It is a scarce Carson City date. The Carson City Mint stuck a meager 30,945 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagles that year.
The coin was designed by James B. Longacre and the first year of striking occurred in 1849. There are three basic types of $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagles. Type 1 was struck between 1849 and 1866-S and the denomination is stated as “TWENTY D.” But there is “IN GOD WE TRUST” Motto on the reverse.
The Type 2 coins were struck between 1866 and 1876-S. The denomination is the same as the Type 1, but the motto appears on the reverse.
The Type 3 coins were struck between 1877 and 1907. The denomination is now expressed as “TWENTY DOLLARS,” and the motto appears on the reverse.
This 1889-CC $20 Gold Liberty, Type 3, has been graded as AU-50 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).
When one hears the date “1889-CC” most coin collectors think of the 1889-CC Morgan Silver Dollar and how rare it is. But the mintage of the 1889-CC Morgan had a mintage of 350,000 coins struck. The 1889-CC $20 Gold Liberty has less than 10% of the same date Morgan Dollar’s mintage, yet the Morgan Silver Dollar in the same grade is around $10,000!
We believe that the few small hoards of “CC” $20 Gold Liberties that existed were quickly dispersed into the marketplace back in the 1990s. The highest grade of 1889-CC $20 Liberty that NGC has degraded to date is only ONE MS63 coin and that the NGC coin is valued in the NGC Price Guide is $70,000.00!
At the PCGS Grading Service the highest graded coin of this date is only ONE MS64.
Unlike typical examples, this coin has very few bag marks and still retains a little bit of luster on both the obverse and the reverse. Additionally, this coin has a much better than average strike for this date.
