One Ounce American Gold Eagles from Golden Eagle Coins are an extremely popular way of buying gold. Each coin is guaranteed by the US Mint and Treasury for it's weight and purity. Golden Eagle also inspects each coin before shipping to ensure the highest quality of coins. By choosing random dates which are limited to excess stock on hand, you can save additional premiums over specific previous years as well as the current year issued coins. All coins are brilliant uncirculated condition and dates will range from 1986-Date.
The 1 oz American Gold Eagle has a face value of $50 and is the largest and heaviest coin produced by the United States Mint. The purity of the coin is 91.67% gold but contains 1 troy ounce of pure gold. The additional metals in the coins are copper (5%) and silver (3%) creating a purity of 22 karat. This additional metal is added to keep the coin from scratching as gold is actually a softer metal and can scratch easily in it's pure state. The coin is actually more than one ounce with an exact weight of 1.0909 troy ounces. This 22kt alloy is traditionally know as crown gold and is an English standard.
The obverse or front of the coin depicts a design popularized by Augustus St Gaudens the designer of the old US $20 Gold coins minted from 1907-1933. The image shows lady liberty in full-figure holding a torch and olive branch with the Capitol building in the background. The reverse was designed by Miley Busiek and features a female eagle and her hatchlings with her companion flying high above with the olive branch.
The gold eagle is popular with investors and is an IRA approved gold bullion product. The coins typically carry higher premiums than gold bars but they also consistently maintain higher resale value when liquidating precious metals. Although some dates and sizes can be slightly rare, in general one ounce gold eagles simply track the price of gold in terms of value. Selling gold eagles is simple and does have any special tax forms like the 1099B form that is associated with some precious metals products. For more information on tax reporting see our handy bullion tax guide.
