The Homestead National Monument of America celebrates the Homestead Act of 1862. This act allowed a person to own 160 acres of land for up to 5 years, if the owner improved the land while they settled there. Altogether, the act made over 270 million acres of public land into privately owned land. The Homestead National Monument of America is located in Nebraska and includes some of the first acres owned from the Homestead Act of 1862. Authorized in March of 1936, the Homestead National Monument of America has preserved some of the nation's oldest prairies, that would have been extinct if it didn't become a national historic sight. The main attraction for the Homestead National Monument of America is its large prairies and numerous hiking trails.
The 2015 Homestead National Monument of America Silver 5oz ATB is the third coin minted, for the series, in 2015. Each year, the US Mint puts out 5 ATB 5oz coins, honoring the nation's historical monuments, parks, and landmarks. This series is though to take 11 years to complete, with 56 coins finished in the end. Coin collectors will recognize this series, since it is the larger version of the Quarter National Parks proof set series. More and more collectors are jumping on the ATB 5oz silver coin bandwagon so finding the years is becoming more difficult, especially since limited amounts are produced.
