In 1986, the United States began striking gold and silver bullion coins to compete with world bullion coins such as the Canadian Maple Leaf, the South African Krugerrand, and others. The American Gold Eagles from Golden Eagle Coins are an extremely popular way of buying gold. Each coin is guaranteed by the US Mint and Treasury for it's weight and purity. Golden Eagle also inspects each coin before shipping to ensure the highest quality of coins. The Certified Burnished American $5 Gold Eagle 2007-W MS70 NGC has earned the highest grade for coins and is also a burnished coin. West Point Mint is located in New York and places a "W" mint-mark on all of its coins, which makes them burnished.
If you were to place an American Gold Eagle on a scale, you would find that it weighs more than one ounce with an exact weight of 1.0909 troy ounces. The purity, of the American Gold Eagle, is 91.67% gold but contains 1 troy ounce of pure gold. The additional metals in the coins are copper and silver creating a purity of 22 karat. This additional metal is added to keep the coin from scratching as gold is actually a softer metal and can scratch easily in it's pure state. This 22 karat alloy is traditionally knows as crown gold and is an English standard.
