The Sacagawea Dollar has surprised the US Mint, by its popular reception among coin collectors. With its small size and golden tone, the Sacagawea Dollar has been a beloved collection since its first year of mintage in 2000. With the production of the Sacagawea Dollar, the mint also decided to keep a tighter reign on the coin's mintage from year to year, in hopes of avoiding unused coins laying around. In 2009, the US Mint decided to change the Sacagawea Dollar's reverse yearly, departing from the simple eagle design it used for 8 years. The 2017-P Sacagawea Dollar was minted at the Philadelphia Mint, the first mint facility in the US, and carries the "P" mint-mark for reference. The obverse displays the lovely Shoshone guide, realistically honoring Sacagawea and the life she left behind in the name of progress.
