Each face portrayed on US currency has a reason why it has earned a spot in history. Sacagawea was the Shoshone guide to help the Lewis and Clark expedition from 1804-1806. Sacagawea helped the duo from North Dakota to the Pacific Ocean, making constant cultural contacts with the Native Americans along the way. Sacagawea was the main emblem for early women's suffrage movements in the early 1900's, symbolizing women's worth and independence. Instead of overproducing the Sacagawea Dollar, the US Mint decided to control how the new dollar would spread. Not every Sacagawea was used for circulation, allowing more to be saved for mint collecting. The 2000-S Sacagawea Dollar was minted at the reputable San Francisco Mint, carrying the "S" mint-mark. The obverse portrays the admirable Shoshone guide, with the coin's date of mintage. The reverse reveals an eagle design, much similar to the reverses on the Eisenhower and Susan B. Anthony Dollars.
