  • Description:

Unlike today, many people would grow up learning how to do one thing and spend the rest of their lives doing that one thing. It could be either carpentry or a seamstress or, in George T. Morgan's case, it was engraving. Starting his engraving career in England, Morgan made his way into the US Mint in 1876. He worked under the Chief engraver, William Barber, being his assistant engraver for forty years. In 1917, Barber passed away, making Morgan the Chief engraver of the US Mint. Although he designed many US coins, Morgan received full credit for the beautiful Lady Liberty design on the 100 year old Morgan silver dollars. Your 1883-O Morgan is considered to be almost uncirculated, with bag marks or surface abrasions present. The mint mark "O" is underneath the eagle, on the reverse, and it represents the New Orleans branch of the US Mint.
