Britannia is a goddess who represents a British island that was once ruled by Rome. Once Rome left, Britain kept the female symbol and has used her every since whenever referring to battle and war. On the reverse design, of the Silver Britannia coins, Britannia wears a long, loose toga that gracefully is flowing in the wind. Hear head bears the weight of a Corinthian helmet, a helmet made of bronze containing a long projection to protect the neck in battle. In one hand, she holds her weapon of choice, a trident, and the other holds a delicate olive branch. These two objects represent Britannia's strength in battle and her desire to seek peace. The background of the reverse is a frosted finish but Britannia herself is in proof-like quality. The writing around the edge of the coin says, "Britannia 2002," and "one ounce fine silver." The obverse design is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, sitting at a side angle so her profile is highlighted. Her tight curls wear the infamous tiered crown and her delicate features insinuate a smile. The coin's denomination, "2 pounds," is inscribed around the rim along with the shortened saying, "Red Fid Def," that means Defender of the Faith.
