Each year, the Perth Mint proudly releases a new design on the reverse of the Australian Kangaroo. The right profile effigy of Queen Elizabeth II has reigned on every obverse coin, from the UK and Commonwealth Nations, since 1952. The 4th generation design, by Ian Rank-Broadley, was produced for the first time in 1998 and has been used ever since.
Not only is the Perth Mint the oldest standing mint in Australia but the Australian Gold Kangaroo series is the oldest series to be produced out of the mint. Beginning in 1986, as the Australian Gold Nugget series, the Perth Mint desired to offer a coin collection that used the country's gold reserves. Australia also has a history of famous gold rushes so the gold nugget seemed to be the appropriate theme at the time. But when the Silver Kookaburra series was released, the Perth Mint thought it would be more fitting to offer a gold coin series that also highlighted the magnificent wildlife in the outback. In 1990, the Australian Gold Kangaroo series picked up where the Gold Nugget series left off.
