The Mexican Mint does not change the design on the coins every year but decides to keep the flawless layout as a constant celebration to honor Mexican history. Used as a symbol for victory since ancient Roman times, the winged Victoria stands graciously tall in front of a scenic view. She is balanced on one leg, with arms outstretched, and extensive wings. Her stance invites warriors near and far to take hold of the victory awaiting them, once they have defeated their captors. Since Mexico gained independence from Spain, they have used her image to commemorate the independence. Behind Victoria are two famous volcanoes in Mexico that are still active today: Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl. Legend has it that long ago, before they were volcanoes, they were young lovers. One was a princess and the other a warrior, who was sent away to war. When he returned, he found his princess dead and took her to the gods to bring her back to life. Instead of reviving her, the gods answered his plea by making the two of them into volcanoes that will stand next to each other for eternity. Transcribed on the obverse is, "1 onza plata pura," "1994," and "ley .999." These words state the year the coin was minted in and guarantees the coin's authenticity.
The reverse of the silver coin depicts a large eagle, perched on a prickly pear cactus while holding a snake in its mouth. This is known as the national seal in Mexico and also contains the undertone of good defeating evil. These silver coins are .999 fine silver and come in brilliant uncirculated condition. The Mexican Libertad series isn't just a bullion, pure silver coin. It's a gateway to Mexican history and folklore for the excited coin collector.
