Little else is on newspaper headlines in 1849 than the California gold rush. Americans and foreigners alike flooded California in search for that precious yellow metal. The year held other curiosities. James Polk would become the first US President to have a photo of himself taken. Zachary Taylor was sworn in as 12th president, however, he did not wish to be sworn in on his sabbath, the day that year fell on a Sunday, so rumor has it that the president of the Senate was the US President for one day. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo brought the Mexican American War to an end, this treaty also increased the size of the United States tremendously.
