  • Description:

The San Francisco Mint first opened to help make coins out of the gold the prospectors were mining during the gold rush. That was a good idea because only in its first year, it minted over $4 million worth of coins. The San Francisco Mint stamps all of its coins with the "S" mint-mark and is known for its strong strikes that last through the heaviest circulation. The 1875-S Seated Liberty Dime Below Bow is in very fine condition, exhibiting wear on both sides of the coin. On the Seated Liberty Dimes, the mint-mark is either featured above the bow, on the wreath, or below. This dime contains the "S" mint-mark below the bow. The San Francisco Mint produced over 9 million dimes, in 1875, which is considered a fairly high mintage for the San Francisco Mint. In 1875, the Civil Rights Act was passed by Congress, the first college football game was played, and the Anti-Slavery Society was formed.

The Goddess of Liberty has been used in many cultures to celebrate the concept of liberty and freedom from oppressors, dating back to the Roman Empire and before. The goddess has been used on currency worldwide, especially in the US, and still is a nationwide icon. Normally, the goddess is depicted wearing a draped robe that loosely fits and her hands are usually occupied holding other significant symbols, such as olive branches, arrows, or a torch. For the US, the most prominent depiction stands in New York's harbor, a gift from the French in 1886. The Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mint participated in the production of the Seated Liberty Dime. The San Francisco Mint was established until 1854 so it joined in later on for the series.
