  • Description:

The New Orleans Mint aided in the production of the Seated Liberty Dime and kept the mintages pretty low. After being decommissioned in 1909, the New Orleans Mint became an assay office, fallout shelter, and storage facility for the US Coast Guard. It stands today as a historical national landmark. The 1857-O Seated Liberty Dime has a mintage of only 1.5 million minted, and is considered to be in very fine condition, with wear on the coin and lacking in detail. Minted by the New Orleans Mint, the 1857-O Seated Liberty Dime carries the "O" mint-mark.

The Seated Liberty design was used on all coinage, such as the dime, quarter, and half dollar. This was the trend until 1916, wherein the US Mint assigned different designs to all the denominational coins. The Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mint participated in the production of the Seated Liberty Dime. The San Francisco Mint was established until 1854 so it joined in later on for the series. The 1857-O Seated Liberty Dime shares the date with some other important US events. In 1857, James Buchanan became president, the New York banks close for 2 months due to a financial crisis, and the Panic of 1857 occurs.
