  • Description:

Christian Gobrecht completed the design of the Seated Liberty dime, whose obverse was used with every circulating silver U.S. coin of the period. Mint Director Robert Maskell Patterson requested a new coin design, to be reminiscent of the Britannia image found on coinage of the United Kingdom. Chief Engraver William Kneass drew the original sketches, but suffered a stroke and was too ill to finish them or to oversee preparation of the dies. The task then fell to Gobrecht, who was promoted to Second Engraver. The obverse features an image of Liberty sitting on a rock, wearing a dress and holding a staff with a liberty cap on top. Her right hand is balancing a shield with the inscription "Liberty." The reverse features the coin's denominational value of one dime and is surrounded by a Grecian wreath. All Seated Liberty dimes contain 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. This size and metal composition would continue until 1965, when silver was permanently removed from circulating dimes.

The Early Type Seated Liberty Dime 1837-1891 provides the option for those interested in collecting Seated Liberty Dimes but are not concerned about the year or mint-mark. Since we also sell the Seated Liberty Dimes by the date, we do not take requests if this option is ordered. The Seated Liberty Dime was minted from 1837-1891, with several variations and mint-marks, all of which are considered when filling orders for this product. We try our best to provide variety if multiples of this product are purchased but cannot guarantee any specific date or mint-mark. The Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco Mint participated in the production of the Seated Liberty Dime. The San Francisco Mint was established until 1854 so it joined in later on for the series. The Philadelphia Mint was the first mint to be commissioned in the US, as a means to put the new nation on the map for international commerce. The first mint facility was established by the original Founding Fathers and has had its hand in every successful coin series since.
