The Carson City Mint left an imprint on all Morgan silver dollar collectors, because of its low production of the currency coin. But the second most popular mint of the Morgan, that is still standing today, is the San Francisco Mint. Apart from its long-standing business relationship with the US Mint, this west coast based mint goes down in history as one of the most successful US Mints to produce the Morgan silver dollar. It is also a known fact, among collectors, that the west coast mint produces some of the best quality coins among the US Mint sectors. Your 1879-S Morgan has been graded by NGC and awarded the ideal grade of MS64. The Morgan comes in a variety of grades and even in those grades, there are more grades. For instance, your coin is considered to be in brilliant uncirculated condition and it could have earned any grace between MS60-MS70. Since most Morgans were circulated at one point or kept in bags in the Treasury, it is hard to find a Morgan with a MS65 and above grade.
