This 1899 $2 Silver Certificate, Friedberg 249, is a highly collectible example of classic large-size U.S. currency, graded Choice Very Fine 35 PPQ by PCGS Banknote. Issued during the late 19th century, this note features the distinctive “Mini-Porthole” portrait of George Washington centered within an ornate vignette, flanked by allegorical figures representing industry and agriculture. The bold blue Treasury seal and serial numbers contrast sharply against the intricate black engraving, showcasing the craftsmanship of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

The reverse displays a classic green design with “United States of America” prominently framed in decorative scrollwork, typical of the era’s artistic style. Signatures of Lyons and Roberts confirm its issue period under the Silver Certificate series, redeemable at the time for silver coin.

Despite light circulation consistent with its grade, this example retains strong paper quality, original embossing, and vibrant color, justifying its Premium Paper Quality designation. Large-size Silver Certificates like this remain popular for their historical significance and visual appeal.
