The Denver Mint was established in 1906 and aided in many famous coin series. Being a recently opened mint, the Denver Mint mainly specialized in commemoratives and medals, and randomly participate when coin collections needed to be produced at a faster rate. The Walking Liberty Half Dollar was the first collection the Denver Mint fully participated in from start to finish. The Kennedy Half Dollars were also minted by the Denver Mint and carry the famous "D" mint-mark. The 1985-D Kennedy Half Dollar is in brilliant uncirculated condition and is one of almost 20 million minted. The 1985-D Kennedy Half Dollar will be packaged in a coin flip to ensure proper protection.

The US Mint had wanted to feature President Kennedy on a coin but were unsure of the denomination. When John F. Kennedy was assassinated, within hours, the US Mint had a plan to produce the next half dollar with his portrait on the obverse, since Jackie O. requested that denomination. Sculptors, Gilroy Roberts and Frank Gasparro, were approached since they had previously designed a coin of President Kennedy for a medal. This design was even approved by the late president so there were no hesitations when it came to completing the die for the half dollar. Robert's obverse design and Gasparro's reverse design worked together to make the Kennedy Half Dollar. The obverse reveals a side portrait of the late president, with the coin's date of mintage. The reverse signifies the US National Seal, a bald eagle covered by a shield and each talon holding arrows and olive branches. The coin's 50 cent denomination is also featured on the reverse.
